Description:
The Greenhouse assistant is an hourly position for SUU students who wish to learn about plant propagation and all the aspects of greenhouse management.
Responsabilities:
- Learn to recognize the different plants in the greenhouse and their growing needs.
- Learn how the irrigation, cooling, and heating systems work and monitor them periodically.
- Learn to propagate, prune, and fertilize plants.
- Learn about the propagation of native plants, and the different aspects of landscape design using these plants.
- Identify and control diseases, weeds, and insect pests.
- Monitor plants at the greenhouse and other places around campus that the greenhouse oversees.
- Maintain tools, equipment, and materials used in the greenhouse operations.
- Deliver and arrange plants displayed in buildings, special events, or in landscape areas around the university.
- Assist and/or organize plant sales.
- Assist with educational programs, and tours at the greenhouse.
Qualifications:
- Disposition to learn with a positive attitude.
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Accuracy and attention to detail.
- Education and/or experience in the agriculture industry, not required but helpful.
- Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, and request clarification when needed.
